Trauma

Past trauma and traumatic experiences don’t always stay in the past.

You may have moved on with your life, built a career, relationships and a family, and learnt how to manage whatever comes your way. Yet something still feels unsettled inside. You might find yourself anxious or constantly on edge, unable to switch off, or reacting more strongly than you’d like, especially in situations that remind you of earlier experiences.

Sometimes the connection to the past is easy to recognise. You know that growing up without enough emotional support, feeling criticised or unseen, experiencing rejection or abandonment, or living with conflict or unpredictability has affected you. At other times, it can be hard to understand. You may simply know that you struggle with trust, find it difficult to relax, feel responsible for everyone else, or carry a persistent sense that you are not enough.

None of this means you are broken, or that you should somehow have been able to move past it by now.

When the past continues to shape the present

When experiences were overwhelming or there wasn’t enough support to help you process what was happening, you may have developed ways of coping that helped you get through at the time. You learnt to keep your feelings to yourself, stay alert to what others might need, be highly capable and self-reliant, keep busy, avoid difficult emotions or work hard to get things right.

What once helped you cope can continue long after the original circumstances have changed.

Trauma doesn't always come from one major event. It can also develop through the accumulation of experiences in which you didn't consistently feel emotionally safe, supported, understood or able to be yourself.

Healing without reliving everything

Therapy doesn't require you to tell me everything that has happened to you. We can start with what you are experiencing now and explore what feels relevant and accessible.

As experiences, beliefs and emotional responses are understood and processed, their emotional weight can begin to lessen. Parts of you that have remained watchful, protective or reactive can gradually feel less burdened by what happened in the past.

Over time, this can create more room to respond to life as it is now rather than continually responding to what has already happened.

Healing isn't about erasing your history. It is about having more freedom in how much influence that history has over your life.

You may begin to feel more present, trust yourself more, and have greater freedom to connect, make choices, enjoy your life and move towards the relationships and experiences that matter to you.
